Assessment and Testing
Assessment is a key part of the teaching and learning process. Children are assessed on a daily basis by their teachers which tells us what we need to do to ensure that children meet their full potential.
From time to time children will complete tests as a measure of what they have fully embedded in their long term memory.
In terms of our performance on a national level we are pleased that our results are excellent as you will see below.

National Phonics Assessments in Year One
At St Joseph's we are passionate about ensuring that children grasp their phonics from the very beginning of their time with us. Our approach is very structured and ensures that all children make rapid progress.
Our children always make excellent progress in phonics. In 2023, the result was 85%, reflecting the work that we do to embed these early learning skills. 45% of children scored 38/40 or above. 15% of children scored full marks.
Year Four National Tables Test
Year Four performed exceptionally well in the 2023 tests. This reflects the great emphasis the teachers place on learning tables from an early age.

Year Six Tests (Key Stage Two)
We are very pleased to achieve so highly at Key Stage Two, year-on-year. Children in year six are expected to reach a national standard of attainment in reading, writing and mathematics.

The greatest challenge for children after the pandemic appeared to be in reaching the higher expectations of greater depth in their writing.

An average score would give a child a result of 100. Scaled scores range from 80 to 120.
